How to intercept and capture a print job
Method 1
- Open
Windows Control Panel > Devices and Printers. - Right click on the printer and select Printer Properties.
- Go to the tab page Ports.
- Write down the Port currently being used.
- Select the option FILE: (make sure the checkbox is ticked.) Click OK to close.
- Open the application (Word, ERP, ...) and print to the printer as you normally would do.
- You will be prompted to save a file (
Printer Files (*.prn)). Save this file. - Afterwards follow the steps again to set the PORT again to the original port.
Method 2
- Put the printer Offline.
- Physically disconnect the printer by disconnecting the data cable.
- Put the Print queue Offline:
I: OpenWindows Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
II: Right click on the printer and select See what's printing to open the print queue. III: SelectPrinter > Use Printer Offlinefrom the print queue.
- Open the application (Word, ERP, ...) and print to the printer as you normally would do.
(It is normal if you receive an error that you cannot print.) - Open Run (WINDOWS KEY+R and type in
%windir%/system32/Spool/printers. - In the spool folder you will see
.SHDand.SPLfiles. Copy (or zip) these as these are the files you need. - Put the printer back online by either connecting the data cable again or putting the printer online again.
If you don't see or know the spool file location, you can check the location via these steps:
- Open
Print Management.
(or open Run (WINDOWS KEY+R and type inprintmanagement.msc) - Under
Print Management > Print Servers > <your print server here>. - Select your print server and right click and choose Properties.
- Under the tab page Advanced you will see the location of the Spool folder:.

Go toWindows Settings > Apps > Optional featuresand select the View features button and search for Print Management to install it.
